Our Associations
by Ellen White
Satan is continually seeking to overcome the people of God by breaking down the
barriers which separate them from the world. Ancient Israel were enticed into sin when
they ventured into forbidden association with the heathen. In a similar manner are modern
Israel led astray. "The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which
believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God,
should shine unto them."[1 2 COR. 4:4.] All who are not decided followers of Christ
are servants of Satan. In the unregenerate heart there is love of sin, and a disposition
to cherish and excuse it. In the renewed heart there is hatred of sin, and determined
resistance against it. When Christians choose the society of the ungodly and unbelieving,
they expose themselves to temptation. Satan conceals himself from view, and stealthily
draws his bandage across their eyes. They cannot see that such company is calculated to do
them harm, and while all the time assimilating to the world in character, words, and
actions, they are becoming more and more blinded. familiarity with sin inevitably causes
it to appear less repulsive. He who chooses to associate with the servants of Satan soon
ceases to fear their master. 4SP 327
Ancient Israel were especially directed by God to be and remain a people separate from
all nations. They were not to be subjected to witnessing the idolatry of those about them,
lest their own hearts should be corrupted, lest familiarity with ungodly practices should
make them appear less wicked in their eyes. Few realise their own weakness and that the
natural sinfulness of the human heart too often paralyses their noblest endeavours. 4T 109
Young persons who are thrown into one another's society may make their associations a
blessing or a curse. They may edify, bless, and strengthen one another, improving in
deportment, in disposition, in knowledge; or, by permitting themselves to become careless
and unfaithful, they may exert only a demoralising influence. 4T 655
The entertainment was given in honour of Jesus, and He did not hesitate to accept the
courtesy. He well knew that this would give offence to the Pharisaic party, and would also
compromise Him in the eyes of the people. But no question of policy could influence His
movements. With Him external distinctions weighed nothing. That which appealed to His
heart was a soul thirsting for the water of life. DA 274
Children should be so trained and educated that they will expect temptations, and
calculate to meet difficulties and dangers. They should be taught to have control over
themselves, and to nobly overcome difficulties; and if they do not wilfully rush into
danger, and needlessly place themselves in the way of temptation; if they shun evil
influences and vicious society, and then are unavoidably compelled to be in dangerous
company, they will have strength of character to stand for the right and preserve
principle, and will come forth in the strength of God with their morals untainted. If
youth who have been properly educated, make God their trust, their moral powers will stand
the most powerful test. FE 28
Conformity to worldly customs converts the church to the world; it never converts the
world to Christ. Familiarity with sin will inevitably cause it to appear less repulsive.
He who chooses to associate with the servants of Satan will soon cease to fear their
master. When in the way of duty we are brought into trial, as was Daniel in the king's
court, we may be sure that God will protect us; but if we place ourselves under temptation
we shall fall sooner or later. GC11 509
You are, I was shown, connected in family relationship with those who are under the
special controlling influence of the devil. Their feet take hold of hell. They are swift
messengers of Satan. Any connection with even the mother that gave you birth, or other of
your relations who are fastened in an evil course, will be corrupting to you. If you
desire to be a Christian now is your time; now is the golden opportunity. You can only
walk in purity by looking and beholding, praying and believing in Jesus moment by moment.
You have been living in adultery so long that sin does not appear heinous to you. You love
sin. If now you want to leave sin, you must forever renounce it. If you confess your sins,
He is faithful and just to forgive you your sins and to cleanse you from all
unrighteousness. You must not hide or excuse your sins, but you must arise and make haste
to confess your sins and save your soul by seeking the forgiveness of your sins. MR448 13
Now we see need of workers in the opening fields before us, but where are the men who
can be trusted, men who have been year by year growing into a better knowledge of God and
his ways, and the movings of his providence? I want to sound in the ears of these sleepy,
half paralysed souls the words spoken to Nicodemus, "Except a man be born again he
cannot see the kingdom of God." There is need to ask God with all the heart, to
elevate the standard. The commonness, the cheapness of conversation reveal the measure of
spirituality of the members of the church. Now, those who have lived years in this same
experience know not God nor Jesus Christ whom he hath sent; and should such go forth as
representatives of Jesus Christ? These men will never give the right mould to other minds.
They have not grown up to the full stature of men and women in Jesus Christ. They simply
live the name of Christian, but are not fitted for the work of God, and never will be
until they are born again, and learn their A.B.C.'s in the religion of Jesus Christ. There
is hope in one direction. Take the young men and women and place them where they will come
as little as possible in contact with our churches, that the low grade of piety which is
current in this day shall not leaven their ideas of what it means to be a Christian. The
worshippers of God are in need of transforming grace to subordinate the world to religion.
In the place of making the temporal interest first, exhausting soul, body, and spirit to
secure temporal advantages, Jesus points us to the heavenly treasure, and tells us not to
lay up our treasure in earth which will perish, but to lay up for ourselves treasure in
heaven which will not perish, for where our treasure is there will our heart be also.
Jesus would have all that profess to believe in him deal in the currency of heaven,
handling those things upon which God has stamped his image and superscription. These he
presents before us of infinite value. We see the need of a deep and thorough work in our
churches; but the Lord alone can by his Holy Spirit make the hearts that are as steel,
soft and sympathetic, and true to the service of Christ. We are far behind because the
churches have folded their hands in a peace and safety attitude, and are at ease in Zion,
doing almost nothing when the living zeal should be in their hearts as never before. Satan
is stirring the powers from beneath to make one last desperate effort to convert the world
to his own principles. He has his plans laid with Satanic subtlety, and destruction cometh
suddenly while these that have the light, the warnings that such a crisis is before us are
almost unmoved. . . PC 344
In these exciting gatherings, carried away by the glamour and passion of human
influence, youth that have been carefully instructed to obey the law of God are led to
form attachments for those whose education has been a mistake, and whose religious
experience has been a fraud. They sell themselves to life-long bondage. As long as they
live, they must be hampered by their union with a cheap, superficial character, one who
lives for display, but who has not the precious inward adorning, the ornament of a meek
and quiet spirit, which in the sight of God is of great price. PH048 15
The Pharisee who invited Christ to his house on this occasion was a ruler in Israel, a
member of the Sanhedrin, a man of influence. Jesus had not accepted his invitation for the
purpose of satisfying his appetite, or to furnish himself with an hour of amusement; but
he had accepted it for the purpose of representing the character of God. Christians may
safely accept invitations to dinners where promiscuous company should gather, if they will
but follow the example of Christ, and act from the same motives as did our Saviour. PH048
