Power of Holy Spirit
by Ellen White
Now, I teach that this blessing is the blessing of sanctification that they received,
that He bestowed upon them; and when we seek God--if we are a sinner, until we are
converted; if we are converted, then we put up the prayer for the power of sanctification
to live clean, wholesome lives. Not that it is the work of an instant; not "once
sanctified, always sanctified"; that is not true. But we should so firmly and eagerly
put up our petition that we receive the blessing. It has the same physiological effect on
us--oh, we just want to praise Jesus, and it makes us so loving and gentle and kind. But
we notice that the disciples were not ready yet to go out with that blessing to do work
for the Master. He told them to tarry until they were endued with power from on high. Then
we put up our petition and hold right on by faith, and that which encouraged us to do this
was the chapter entitled "The shaking Time" in Early Writings --we hung right on
by faith, until great drops of sweat stood on our brow. Believing that the same power that
the disciples had was for us today, we were encouraged to hold on. 3SM 364
There are many ways in which we can work to reach those not of our faith. If the work
of temperance were carried forward by us as it was commenced thirty years ago, if we at
our camp meetings held up before the hundreds and thousands who assemble on the ground the
evils of intemperance in eating and drinking, and especially the evil of liquor-drinking,
if these truths were presented in connection with the evidences of Christ's soon coming,
there would be a shaking among the people. If we showed a zeal proportionate to the
importance of the truths we are handling we would reach hundreds. We need to trim our
lamps and receive in them the holy oil from the two olive branches. When the power of the
Spirit of God rests upon us, there will be an altogether different showing for our labours
from that now seen. 7MR 169
Their amusement will be in contemplating their treasure -- the holy city, the earth
made new, their eternal home. And while they dwell upon those things which are lofty,
pure, and holy, heaven will be brought near, and they will feel the power of the Holy
Spirit, and this will tend to wean them more and more from the world, and cause their
consolation and chief joy to be in the things of heaven, their sweet home. EW 112
Christian workers can never attain the highest success until they learn the secret of
strength. They must give themselves time to think, to pray, to wait upon God for a renewal
of physical, mental, and spiritual power. They need the uplifting of His Spirit. Receiving
this, they will be quickened by fresh life. The wearied frame and tired brain will be
refreshed, the burdened heart will be rested. HP 83
God will move upon men of humble position in society, men who have not become
insensible to the bright rays of light through so long contemplating the light of truth,
and refusing to make any improvement or advancement therein. Many such will be seen
hurrying hither and thither, constrained by the Spirit of God to bring the light to
others. The truth, the word of God, is as a fire in their bones, filling them with a
burning desire to enlighten those who sit in darkness. Many, even among the uneducated,
now proclaim the words of the Lord. Children are impelled by the Spirit to go forth and
declare the message from Heaven. The Spirit is poured out upon all who will yield to its
promptings, and, casting off all man's machinery, his binding rules and cautious methods,
they will declare the truth with the might of the Spirit's power. Multitudes will receive
the faith and join the armies of the Lord. RH JUL.23,1895
He is to make use of every entrusted power, that he may overcome the world, the flesh,
and the devil through the power of the Holy Spirit, by grace abundantly provided that he
shall not fail nor be discouraged, but be complete in Christ, accepted in the Beloved. RH
