Visions of Ellen White
by Ellen White
Friday night several heard my voice exclaiming, "Look, Look!" Whether I was
dreaming or in vision, I cannot tell. I slept alone. The time of trouble was upon us. I
saw our people in great distress, weeping and praying, pleading the sure promises of God,
while the wicked were all around us, mocking us and threatening to destroy us. They
ridiculed our feebleness, they mocked at the smallness of our numbers, and taunted us with
words calculated to cut deep. They charged us with taking an independent position from all
the rest of the world. They had cut off our resources so that we could not buy or sell,
and they referred to our abject poverty and stricken condition. They could not see how we
could live without the world. We were dependent on the world, and we must concede to the
customs, practices, and laws of the world, or go out of it. If we were the only people in
the world whom the Lord favoured, the appearances were awfully against us.
They declared that they had the truth, that miracles were among them; that angels from
heaven talked with them and walked with them, that great power and signs and wonders were
performed among them, and that this was the temporal millennium they had been expecting so
long. The whole world was converted and in harmony with the Sunday law, and this little
feeble people stood out in defiance of the laws of the land and the law of God, and
claimed to be the only ones right on the earth.
They declared, "The angels from heaven have spoken to us," referring to those
whom Satan personated that had died and they claimed had gone to heaven. "You will
bear the testimony of the heavenly messengers." They sneered, they mocked, they
derided and abused the sorrowing ones. There was much more but I have not time to write
it.
But while anguish was upon the loyal and true who would not worship the beast or his
image and accept and revere an idol Sabbath, One said, "Look up! Look up!" Every
eye was lifted, and the heavens seemed to part as a scroll when it is rolled together, and
as Stephen looked into heaven, we looked. The mockers were taunting and reviling us, and
boasting of what they intended to do to us if we continued obstinate in holding fast our
faith. But now we were as those who heard them not; we were gazing upon a scene that shut
out everything else. 2MR 207,208

While in Europe the things that transpired in ----- were opened before me. A voice
said, "Follow me, and I will show you the sins that are practised by those who stand
in responsible positions." I went through the rooms, and I saw you, a watchman upon
the walls of Zion, were very intimate with another man's wife, betraying sacred trusts,
crucifying your Lord afresh. Did you consider that there was a Watcher, the Holy One, who
was witnessing your evil work, seeing your actions and hearing your words, and these are
also registered in the books of heaven?
She was sitting on your lap; you were kissing her, and she was kissing you. Other
scenes of fondness, sensual looks and deportment, were presented before me, which sent a
thrill of horror through my soul. Your arm encircled her waist, and the fondness expressed
was having a bewitching influence. Then a curtain was lifted, and I was shown you in bed
with -----. My Guide said, "Iniquity, adultery."--Letter 16, 1888. 3SM 44

I dreamed that several of our brethren were in council, considering plans of labour for
this season [1874]. They thought it best not to enter the large cities, but to begin work
in small places, remote from the cities; here they would meet less opposition from the
clergy, and would avoid great expense. They reasoned that our ministers, being few in
number, could not be spared to instruct and care for those who might accept the truth in
the cities, and who, because of the greater opposition they would there meet, would need
more help than would the churches in small country places. Thus the fruit of giving a
course of lectures in the city would, in a great measure, be lost. Again, it was urged
that, because of our limited means, and because of the many changes from moving that might
be expected from a church in a large city, it would be difficult to build up a church that
would be a strength to the cause. My husband was urging the brethren to make broader plans
without delay, and put forth, in our large cities, extended and thorough effort, that
would better correspond to the character of our message. One worker related incidents of
his experience in the cities, showing that the work was nearly a failure, but he testified
to better success in the small places.
One of dignity and authority--One who is present in all our council meetings--was
listening with deepest interest to every word. He spoke with deliberation and perfect
assurance. "The whole world," He said, "is God's great vineyard. The cities
and villages constitute a part of that vineyard. These must be worked." 7T 34
In the visions of the night a very impressive scene passed before me. I saw an immense
ball of fire fall among some beautiful mansions, causing their instant destruction. I
heard someone say: "We knew that the judgements of God were coming upon the earth,
but we did not know that they would come so soon." Others, with agonised voices,
said: "You knew! Why then did you not tell us? We did not know." On every side I
heard similar words of reproach spoken. 9T 28
About four months since I had a vision of events all in the future. I saw the time of
trouble, such as never was. Jesus told me it was the time of Jacob's trouble, and that we
should be delivered out of it by the voice of God. Then I saw the four angels cease to
hold the four winds. And I saw famine, pestilence and sword--nation rose against nation,
and the whole world was in confusion. Then we cried to God day and night for deliverance,
until we began to hear the bells on Jesus' garment. And I saw Jesus rise up in the
Holiest, and as he came out we heard the tinkling of the bells and knew that our High
Priest was coming out. Then we heard the voice of God which shook the heavens and the
earth, and gave the 144,000 the day and hour of Jesus coming. Then the saints were free,
united, and full of the glory of God, for he has turned their captivity. And I saw a
flaming cloud come where Jesus' stood. Then Jesus laid off his priestly garment and put on
his Kingly robe, and took his place on the cloud which carried him to the East, where it
first appeared to the saints on earth--a small black cloud which was the sign of the Son
of Man. While the cloud was passing from the Holiest to the East, which took a number of
days, the synagogue of Satan worshipped at the saint's feet. Portland, April 6, 1846.

While at Loma Linda, California, April 16, 1906, there passed before me a most
wonderful representation. During a vision of the night, I stood on an eminence, from which
I could see houses shaken like a reed in the wind. Buildings, great and small, were
falling to the ground. Pleasure resorts, theatres, hotels, and the homes of the wealthy
were shaken and shattered. Many lives were blotted out of existence, and the air was
filled with the shrieks of the injured and the terrified.
The destroying angels of God were at work. One touch, and buildings so thoroughly
constructed that men regarded them as secure against every danger, quickly became heaps of
rubbish. There was no assurance of safety in any place. I did not feel in any special
peril, but the awfulness of the scenes that passed before me I cannot find words to
describe. It seemed that the forbearance of God was exhausted, and that the judgement day
had come.
The angel that stood by my side then instructed me that but few have any conception of
the wickedness existing in our world today, and especially the wickedness in the large
cities. He declared that the Lord has appointed a time when He will visit transgressors in
wrath for persistent disregard of His law.
Terrible as was the representation that passed before me, that which impressed itself
most vividly upon my mind was the instruction given in connection with it. The angel that
stood by my side declared that God's supreme rulership, and the sacredness of His law,
must be revealed to those who persistently refuse to render obedience to the King of
kings. Those who choose to remain disloyal must be visited in mercy with judgements, in
order that, if possible, they may be aroused to a realisation of the sinfulness of their
course.-- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 92. (1909) EV 28
Last Friday morning, just before I awoke, a very impressive scene was presented before
me. I seemed to awake from sleep but was not in my home. From the windows I could behold a
terrible conflagration. Great balls of fire were falling upon houses, and from these balls
fiery arrows were flying in every direction. It was impossible to check the fires that
were kindled, and many places were being destroyed. The terror of the people was
indescribable. After a time I awoke and found myself at home.-- Letter 278, 1906. EV 29
Here we saw the tree of life and the throne of God. Out of the throne came a pure river
of water, and on either side of the river was the tree of life. On one side of the river
was a trunk of a tree, and a trunk on the other side of the river, both of pure,
transparent gold. At first I thought I saw two trees. I looked again, and saw that they
were united at the top in one tree. So it was the tree of life on either side of the river
of life. Its branches bowed to the place where we stood, and the fruit was glorious; it
looked like gold mixed with silver.
We all went under the tree and sat down to look at the glory of the place, when
Brethren Fitch and Stockman, who had preached the gospel of the kingdom, and whom God had
laid in the grave to save them, came up to us and asked us what we had passed through
while they were sleeping. We tried to call up our greatest trials, but they looked so
small compared with the far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory that surrounded us
that we could not speak them out, and we all cried out, "Alleluia, heaven is cheap
enough!" and we touched our glorious harps and made heaven's arches ring.
With Jesus at our head we all descended from the city down to this earth, on a great
and mighty mountain, which could not bear Jesus up, and it parted asunder, and there was a
mighty plain. Then we looked up and saw the great city, with twelve foundations, and
twelve gates, three on each side, and an angel at each gate. We all cried out, "The
city, the great city, it's coming, it's coming down from God out of heaven," and it
came and settled on the place where we stood. Then we began to look at the glorious things
outside of the city. There I saw most glorious houses, that had the appearance of silver,
supported by four pillars set with pearls most glorious to behold. These were to be
inhabited by the saints. In each was a golden shelf. I saw many of the saints go into the
houses, take off their glittering crowns and lay them on the shelf, then go out into the
field by the houses to do something with the earth; not as we have to do with the earth
here; no, no. A glorious light shone all about their heads, and they were continually
shouting and offering praises to God. EW 17
I saw another field full of all kinds of flowers, and as I plucked them, I cried out,
"They will never fade." Next I saw a field of tall grass, most glorious to
behold; it was living green and had a reflection of silver and gold, as it waved proudly
to the glory of King Jesus. Then we entered a field full of all kinds of beasts--the lion,
the lamb, the leopard, and the wolf, all together in perfect union. We passed through the
midst of them, and they followed on peaceably after. Then we entered a wood, not like the
dark woods we have here; no, no; but light, and all over glorious; the branches of the
trees moved to and fro, and we all cried out, "We will dwell safely in the wilderness
and sleep in the woods." We passed through the woods, for we were on our way to Mount
Zion.
As we were travelling along, we met a company who also were gazing at the glories of
the place. I noticed red as a border on their garments; their crowns were brilliant; their
robes were pure white. As we greeted them, I asked Jesus who they were. He said they were
martyrs that had been slain for Him. With them was an innumerable company of little ones;
they also had a hem of red on their garments. Mount Zion was just before us, and on the
mount was a glorious temple, and about it were seven other mountains, on which grew roses
and lilies. And I saw the little ones climb, or, if they chose, use their little wings and
fly, to the top of the mountains and pluck the never-fading flowers. There were all kinds
of trees around the temple to beautify the place: the box, the pine, the fir, the oil, the
myrtle, the pomegranate, and the fig tree bowed down with the weight of its timely
figs--these made the place all over glorious. And as we were about to enter the holy
temple, Jesus raised His lovely voice and said, "Only the 144,000 enter this
place," and we shouted, "Alleluia." EW 18
This temple was supported by seven pillars, all of transparent gold, set with pearls
most glorious. The wonderful things I there saw I cannot describe. Oh, that I could talk
in the language of Canaan, then could I tell a little of the glory of the better world. I
saw there tables of stone in which the names of the 144,000 were engraved in letters of
gold. After we beheld the glory of the temple, we went out, and Jesus left us and went to
the city. Soon we heard His lovely voice again, saying, "Come, My people, you have
come out of great tribulation, and done My will; suffered for Me; come in to supper, for I
will gird Myself, and serve you." We shouted, "Alleluia! glory!" and
entered into the city. And I saw a table of pure silver; it was many miles in length, yet
our eyes could extend over it. I saw the fruit of the tree of life, the manna, almonds,
figs, pomegranates, grapes, and many other kinds of fruit. I asked Jesus to let me eat of
the fruit. He said, "Not now. Those who eat of the fruit of this land go back to
earth no more. But in a little while, if faithful, you shall both eat of the fruit of the
tree of life and drink of the water of the fountain." And He said, "You must go
back to the earth again and relate to others what I have revealed to you." Then an
angel bore me gently down to this dark world. Sometimes I think I can stay here no longer;
all things of earth look so dreary. I feel very lonely here, for I have seen a better
land. Oh, that I had wings like a dove, then would I fly away and be at rest! EW 19
I then saw Jesus leading His people to the tree of life, and again we heard His lovely
voice, richer than any music that ever fell on mortal ear, saying, "The leaves of
this tree are for the healing of the nations. Eat ye all of it." Upon the tree of
life was most beautiful fruit, of which the saints could partake freely. In the city was a
most glorious throne, from which proceeded a pure river of water of life, clear as
crystal. On each side of this river was the tree of life, and on the banks of the river
were other beautiful trees bearing fruit which was good for food. EW 289
My attention was again directed to the earth. The wicked had been destroyed, and their
dead bodies were lying upon its surface. The wrath of God in the seven last plagues had
been visited upon the inhabitants of the earth, causing them to gnaw their tongues from
pain and to curse God. The false shepherds had been the signal objects of Jehovah's wrath.
Their eyes had consumed away in their holes, and their tongues in their mouths, while they
stood upon their feet. After the saints had been delivered by the voice of God, the wicked
multitude turned their rage upon one another. The earth seemed to be deluged with blood,
and dead bodies were from one end of it to the other. EW 289
Then I saw thrones, and Jesus and the redeemed saints sat upon them; and the saints
reigned as kings and priests unto God. Christ, in union with His people, judged the wicked
dead, comparing their acts with the statute book, the Word of God, and deciding every case
according to the deeds done in the body. Then they meted out to the wicked the portion
which they must suffer, according to their works; and it was written against their names
in the book of death. Satan also and his angels were judged by Jesus and the saints.
Satan's punishment was to be far greater than that of those whom he had deceived. His
suffering would so far exceed theirs as to bear no comparison with it. After all those
whom he had deceived had perished, Satan was still to live and suffer on much longer. EW

Last night a scene was presented before me. I may never feel free to reveal all of it,
but I will reveal a little.
It seemed that an immense ball of fire came down upon the world, and crushed large
houses. From place to place rose the cry, "The Lord has come! The Lord has
come!" Many were unprepared to meet Him, but a few were saying, "Praise the
Lord!"
"Why are you praising the Lord?" inquired those upon whom was coming sudden
destruction.
"Because we now see what we have been looking for."
"If you believed that these things were coming, why did you not tell us?" was
the terrible response. "We did not know about these things. Why did you leave us in
ignorance? Again and again you have seen us; why did you not become acquainted with us,
and tell us of the judgement to come, and that we must serve God, lest we perish? Now we
are lost!" RC 243
At the commencement of the Holy Sabbath, (Jan. 5,) we engaged in prayer with Bro.
Belden's family at Rocky Hill, Ct., and the Holy Ghost fell upon us. I was taken off in
Vision to the Most Holy Place, where I saw Jesus still interceding for Israel. On the
bottom of his garment was a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate. Then I saw
that Jesus would not leave the Most Holy Place, until every case was decided either for
salvation or destruction: and that the wrath of God could not come until Jesus had
finished his work in the Most Holy Place--laid off his priestly attire and clothed himself
with the garments of vengeance. Then Jesus will step out from between the Father and man,
and God will keep silent no longer; but pour out his wrath on those who have rejected his
truth. I saw that the anger of the nations, the wrath of God, and the time to judge the
dead, were separate events, one following the other. I saw that Michael had not stood up,
and that the time of trouble, such as never was, had not yet commenced. The nations are
now getting angry, but when our High Priest has finished his work in the Sanctuary, he
will stand up, put on the garments of vengeance, and then the seven last plagues will be
poured out. I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus' work was
done in the Sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues. These plagues enraged
the wicked against the righteous, and they thought that we had brought them down upon
them, and if they could rid the earth of us, then the plagues would be stayed. A decree
went forth to slay the saints, which caused them to cry day and night for deliverance.
This was the time of Jacob's trouble. Then all the saints cried out with anguish of
spirit, and were delivered by the Voice of God. Then the 144,000 triumphed. Their faces
were lighted up with the glory of God. Then I was shown a company who were howling in
agony. On their garments was written in large characters, "thou art weighed in the
balance, and found wanting." I asked who this company were. The angel said,
"these are they who have once kept the Sabbath and have given it up." I heard
them cry with a loud voice--"we have believed in thy coming, and taught it with
energy." And while they were speaking, their eyes would fall upon their garments and
see the writing, and then they would wail aloud. I saw they had drunk of the deep waters,
and fouled the residue with their feet--trodden the Sabbath underfoot, and that is why
they were weighed in the balance and found wanting. Then my attending angel directed me to
the City again, where I saw four angels winging their way to the gate of the City, and
were just presenting the golden card to the angel at the gate. Then I saw another angel
swiftly flying from the direction of the most excellent glory, and crying with a loud
voice to the other angels, and waving something up and down in his hand. I asked my
attending angel for an explanation of what I saw. He told me that I could see no more
then, but he would shortly show me what those things that I then saw meant. RH AUG.01,1849
Shortly before I sent out the testimonies regarding the efforts of the enemy to
undermine the foundation of our faith through the dissemination of seductive theories, I
had read an incident about a ship in a fog meeting an iceberg. For several nights I slept
but little. I seemed to be bowed down as a cart beneath sheaves. One night a scene was
clearly presented before me. A vessel was upon the waters, in a heavy fog. Suddenly the
lookout cried, "Iceberg just ahead!" There, towering high above the ship, was a
gigantic iceberg. An authoritative voice cried out, "Meet it!" There was not a
moment's hesitation. It was a time for instant action. The engineer put on full steam, and
the man at the wheel steered the ship straight into the iceberg. With a crash she struck
the ice. There was a fearful shock, and the iceberg broke into many pieces, falling with a
noise like thunder to the deck. The passengers were violently shaken by the force of the
collision, but no lives were lost. The vessel was injured, but not beyond repair. She
rebounded from the contact, trembling from stem to stern, like a living creature. Then she
moved forward on her way.
Well I knew the meaning of this representation. I had my orders. I had heard the words,
like a voice from our Captain, "Meet it!" I knew what my duty was, and that
there was not a moment to lose. The time for decided action had come. I must without delay
obey the command, "Meet it!"
That night I was up at one o'clock, writing as fast as my hand could pass over the
paper. For the next few days I worked early and late, preparing for our people the
instruction given me regarding the errors that were coming in among us.
I have been hoping that there would be a thorough reformation, and that the principles
for which we fought in the early days, and which were brought out in the power of the Holy
Spirit, would be maintained. SPTB02 55,56
