The Study of God's Word
by Ellen White
A familiarity with the Word of God is our only hope. Those who diligently search the
Scriptures will not accept Satan's delusions as the truth of God. No one need be overcome
by the speculations presented by the enemy of God and of Christ. We are not to speculate
regarding points upon which the Word of God is silent. All that is necessary for our
salvation is given in the Word of God. Day by day we are to make the Bible the man of our
counsel. 1SM 228
What are you doing, brethren, in the great work of preparation? Those who are uniting
with the world are receiving the worldly mould and preparing for the mark of the beast.
Those who are distrustful of self, who are humbling themselves before God and purifying
their souls by obeying the truth these are receiving the heavenly mould and preparing for
the seal of God in their foreheads. When the decree goes forth and the stamp is impressed,
their character will remain pure and spotless for eternity.
Now is the time to prepare. The seal of God will never be placed upon the forehead of
an impure man or woman. It will never be placed upon the forehead of the ambitious,
world-loving man or woman. It will never be placed upon the forehead of men or women of
false tongues or deceitful hearts. All who receive the seal must be without spot before
God--candidates for heaven. Go forward, my brethren and sisters. I can only write briefly
upon these points at this time, merely calling your attention to the necessity of
preparation. Search the Scriptures for yourselves, that you may understand the fearful
solemnity of the present hour. 5T 216
Times that will try men's souls are just before us, and those who are weak in the faith
will not stand the test of those days of peril. The great truths of revelation are to be
carefully studied, for we shall all want an intelligent knowledge of the word of God. By
Bible study and daily communion with Jesus we shall gain clear, well-defined views of
individual responsibility and strength to stand in the day of trial and temptation. He
whose life is united to Christ by hidden links will be kept by the power of God through
faith unto salvation. 5T 273 (HP 138)
An understanding of the customs of those who lived in Bible times, of the location and
time of events, is practical knowledge; for it aids in making clear the figures of the
Bible and in bringing out the force of Christ's lessons. CT 518
Not through controversy and discussion is the soul enlightened. We must look and live.
Nicodemus received the lesson, and carried it with him. He searched the Scriptures in a
new way, not for the discussion of a theory, but in order to receive life for the soul. He
began to see the kingdom of heaven as he submitted himself to the leading of the Holy
Spirit. DA 175
It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the
life of Christ. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each
scene, especially the closing ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, our
confidence in Him will be more constant, our love will be quickened, and we shall be more
deeply imbued with His spirit. If we would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of
penitence and humiliation at the foot of the cross. DA 83
A familiarity with the truths of the Scripture will give the teacher of truth
qualifications that will make him a representative of Christ. The spirit of the Saviour's
teaching will give force and directness to his instruction and to his prayers. His will
not be a narrow, lifeless testimony; he will not preach over and over the same set
discourses; for his mind will be open to the constant illumination of the Holy Spirit.
GW15 252
Do you desire to become a follower of Christ, yet know not how to begin? Are you in
darkness and know not how to find the light? Follow the light you have. Set your heart to
obey what you do know of the word of God. His power, His very life, dwells in His word. As
you receive the word in faith, it will give you power to obey. As you give heed to the
light you have, greater light will come. You are building on God's word, and your
character will be builded after the similitude of the character of Christ. MB 150
By prayer, by the study of His word, by faith in His abiding presence, the weakest of
human beings may live in contact with the living Christ, and He will hold them by a hand
that will never let go. MH 182
There is a work to be done by living human agencies, which they are slow to comprehend.
They need to study the Scriptures, to search the Bible, with humble, teachable minds, that
they may know their place in the work, and not move haphazard, but fall into line, keeping
step with Jesus. "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a
highway for our God." Every talent with which God has endowed the human agent is now
to be awakened, to be employed, not solely in worldly transactions, to buy and sell and
get gain, not to use your God-given powers selfishly, greedily to make a place for
yourself in the earth; no, you want now to consecrate every entrusted talent of means and
ability, having yourself under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Not a word
is to be spoken unadvisedly, to stir up the elements of opposition; not an action entered
into to create any deeper enmity than exists in the hearts of the enemies of truth; and,
moving with well-balanced minds, holding aloft the banner of truth, grace from God will be
given, wisdom will be imparted, and angels of God will be commissioned to minister unto
all who walk in humility of mind, trustingly accepting the truth as it is revealed,
standing by their colours, but not creating persecution by unwise actions, but moving in
the footsteps of Jesus. "Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of
his." PH084 20
As we learn of Christ, we shall understand how to keep our spiritual strength, we shall
feed on the Word of God, and we shall have the blessed experience described by the apostle
in these words: "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not,
yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory" (1 Peter 1:8). RH
FEB.11,1890 (HP 123)
Paul speaks of the riches of the glory of the mystery that is to be made known to the
Gentiles. There are many mysteries in the word of God that we do not comprehend, and many
of us are content to stop our investigation when we have just began to receive a little
knowledge concerning Christ. When there begins to be a little unfolding of the divine
purposes to the mind, and we begin to obtain a slight knowledge of the character of God,
we become satisfied, and think that we have received about all the light that there is for
us in the word of God. But the truth of God is infinite. With painstaking effort, we
should work in the mines of truth, discovering the precious jewels that have been hidden.
It is the minister's privilege to have a constant supply of fresh truth for the people. He
should be in such a position that he can bring from the treasure-house of God not the same
thing over and over, but new beauty and new truth. RH JUN.04,1889
The mere reading of the Word will not accomplish the result designed of heaven; it must
be studied and cherished in the heart. The knowledge of God is not gained without mental
effort. We should diligently study the Bible, asking God for the aid of the Holy Spirit,
that we may understand His Word. We should take one verse and concentrate the mind on the
task of ascertaining the thought which God has put in that verse for us. We should dwell
on the thought till it becomes our own, and we know "what saith the Lord." ....
One passage studied until its significance is clear to the mind and its relation to the
plan of salvation is evident, is of more value than the perusal of many chapters with no
definite purpose in view and no positive instruction gained. Keep your Bible with you. As
you have opportunity, read it; fix the texts in your memory. Even while you are walking
the streets you may read a passage and meditate upon it, thus fixing it in mind. RH

Let every one who claims to believe that the Lord is soon coming, search the Scriptures
as never before; for Satan is determined to try every device possible to keep souls in
darkness, and blind the mind to the perils of the times in which we are living. Let every
believer take up his Bible with earnest prayer, that he may be enlightened by the holy
Spirit as to what is truth, that he may know more of God and of Jesus Christ whom he has
sent. Search for the truth as for hidden treasures, and disappoint the enemy. The time of
test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the
revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the
beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth. For it is the
work of every one to whom the message of warning has come, to lift up Jesus, to present
him to the world as revealed in types, as shadowed in symbols, as manifested in the
revelations of the prophets, as unveiled in the lessons given to his disciples and in the
wonderful miracles wrought for the sons of men. Search the Scriptures; for they are they
that testify of him. RH NOV.22,1892
Already kingdom is rising against kingdom. There is not now a determined engagement. As
yet the four winds are held until the servants of God shall be sealed in their foreheads.
Then the Powers of earth will marshal their forces for the last great battle. How
carefully we should improve the little remaining period of our probation! How earnestly we
should examine ourselves! We should eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God;
that is, carefully study the Word, eat it, digest it, make it a part of our being. We are
to live the Word, not keep it apart from our lives. The character of Christ is to be our
character. We are to be transformed by the renewing of our hearts. Here is our only
safety. Nothing can separate a living Christian from God. RH NOV.27,1900
We should educate the mind so that we can hold communion with God constantly. We must
learn to glance upward in sincere desire, sending a prayer to Heaven in all places and
under all circumstances. You may have that faith that will place your hand in the hand of
Jesus, and by faith you may keep hold of him. You should keep your mind filled with the
precious promises of God. As Christians we do not make half enough of the promises, for
God will never fail in any good thing which he has promised. We should take these promises
singly, view them critically in all their richness, meditate upon them until the soul is
burdened with their greatness, and delighted with their strength and power. I am so sorry
that we deprive ourselves of the blessing we might have, and it is simply because we do
not cherish the thought that the promises of God are for us. God has left them in this
word for us, and we should dig for them as for hidden treasures. Why are we so easily
satisfied with little flashes of light when there is a heaven of illumination for us? We
drink at shallow streams, when there is a great fountain just above us, if we will only
rise a little higher in the pathway of faith. Our natures must be raised from their
earthliness, they must be kindled and purified in the upper brightness of God's divine
presence. But you must remember that only those who obey the commandments of God through
his grace have a right to appropriate the promises written for the consolation of the
children of God. The psalmist says: "Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts;
and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom." ST APR.14,1890
We should study the Bible more that we may become familiar with the promises of God;
then when Satan comes in, flooding the soul with his temptations, as he surely will, we
may meet him with, "It is written." We may be shut in by the promises of God,
which will be as a wall of fire about us. We want to know how to exercise faith. Faith
"is the gift of God," but the power to exercise it is ours. If faith lies
dormant, it is no advantage to us; but in exercise, it holds all blessings in its grasp.
It is the hand by which the soul takes hold of the strength of the Infinite. It is the
medium by which human hearts, renewed by the grace of Christ, are made to beat in harmony
with the great Heart of love. Faith plants itself on the promises of God, and claims them
as surety that he will do just as he said he would. Jesus comes to the sinful, helpless,
needy soul, and says, "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye
receive them, and ye shall have them." Believe; claim the promises, and praise God
that you do receive the things you have asked of him, and when your need is greatest, you
will experience his blessing and receive special help. ST MAY 22,1884
God's Spirit has illuminated every page of Holy Writ, but there are those upon whom it
makes little impression, because it is imperfectly understood. When the shaking comes, by
the introduction of false theories, these surface readers, anchored nowhere, are like
shifting sand. They slide into any position to suit the tenor of their feelings of
bitterness.... Daniel and Revelation must be studied, as well as the other prophecies of
the Old and New Testaments. Let there be light, yes, light, in your dwellings. For this we
need to pray. The Holy Spirit, shining upon the sacred page, will open our understanding,
that we may know what is truth... TM 112
Those who neglect to search the Scriptures, choosing rather to read books of sceptical
writers, or of writers who are frivolous or worldly, will be tempted to neglect prayer, to
withdraw from religious meetings, to invest money in cheap literature, and will so educate
themselves that all taste for the sacred oracles will be erased from the mind. Thus will
they be led to refuse to hear, to refuse to incline the heart to seek God while he may be
found, to call upon him while he is near, while he is still sending messages of reproof,
warning, and entreaty. They say to all the tender entreaties of God's Spirit, "Not
now; I will go into another city, and buy and sell and get gain; and after that I will
begin a new life." O do not be deceived by this suggestion of the enemy to wait, and
that after a time you will repent. The longer you put it off, the less will be your
inclination to turn to God, and obey the invitations of mercy. The most discouraging
development in your case is the very fact that you say, "Go thy way for this time;
when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee." This is an evidence that
conscience has become aroused, and then put to sleep again with an opiate. But think of
this;--conscience may never wake again! While God grants you life, while you are sure of
probation, embrace your day of opportunity and privilege. YI DEC.07,1893
The Bible is what we all need; for it is the science of salvation. Turn not away from
the holy word of God; for it will make you wise unto salvation. The psalmist says,
"The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the
simple." The apostle says, "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were
written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might
have hope." David declares, "Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not
sin against thee." How many are betrayed into sin, because they have not, through
prayerful study of the word of God, realised the sinfulness of sin, and found out how they
may steadfastly resist it. When temptation comes upon them, they seem to be off guard, and
ignorant of the devices of the enemy. We are living in perilous times, and as we draw near
the close of earth's history, there will be no safety for those who do not become familiar
with the word of God. I would warn the disciples of Christ of the impending days of peril,
and beseech you to prepare for the time of test and trial; for everything that can be
shaken, will be shaken. Do we now obey the word of God, and live by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God? Are we established and settled in the present truth?
There is need of closely examining yourselves whether you are in the love of God; for
except Christ be in you, you are reprobates. Self-deception is dangerous, and no one of us
can afford to go on in delusion. YI MAY 18,1893
